Just this year I found out that my wife has never watched Top Gun. Maverick and Goose vs. Iceman and Slider! "I feel the need. The need for some speed!"
For any of you out there reading this and also wondering what Top Gun please click on the hyperlink and watch the trailer.
Back to my wife... I was shocked. What girl that grew up in our era didn't watch that movie and secondly why am I the one in the relationship that has seen it and is shocked that my wife hasn't? Twelve years of marriage and still finding out new things!
What does Top Gun have to do with the write-up?
In our Fully Packed Adventure Ministries Handbook we dive deep and walk through the meaning of Reach Equip Partner and Send with perspective chapter leaders. I recently was reviewing the section on Equip for an upcoming phone call with a perspective chapter leader when I came across this statement:
"Jesus doesn’t want maverick disciple-makers; he wants a community of believers who seek to transfer His Word to the next generation. God’s truth is able to transform hearts in and of itself. But a loving relationship is a catalyst that enhances the transmission of truth."
We don't need maverick or rogue disciple-makers. We need people dedicated to studying His word, seeking His guidance, and willing to die to themselves for the great cause of furthering His kingdom.
Let's look at a passage in John 14:
I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life
1“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
Jesus is the way. He is the Truth. He is the life. Anyone that goes Maverick is stepping outside the way, the truth, and the life. They will not fully grasp what the father has in store for the them. The Maverick way is the solo way. The way in which we put ourselves first and choose not to die to oneself in order to further the kingdom.
By going Maverick we miss out the opportunity to be the catalyst for His glory. This gets me thinking about my earlier years of leading excursions. My desire was to be at the front the entire time. The Maverick leading the way and breaking the any rule that came along. But then something happened. On one trip I got stuck in the back. It was the most rewarding thing that happened to me. I was able to connect, help, and be a catalyst for anyone who dropped off the lead group. Had this never happened I wouldn't have ever been able to see what rewarding work was behind me. By not going Maverick I was able to seek to trust in Him and thus transfer that trust into other people.
Let's back up a second and focus in on the last part of the passage from the FPAM Handbook. I believe this reinforces what we just talked about - why we don't need Maverick disciple-makers:
"God’s truth is able to transform hearts in and of itself. But a loving relationship is a catalyst that enhances the transmission of truth."
God's word alone is able to transform hearts. He certainly doesn't need us, nor a maverick, but he desires to have a relationship with His children and thus we should desire to have a relationship with our brothers and sisters in Christ as well. By doing so we create a catalyst that enhances the delivery of His word thus creating new life!
2 Corinthians 5:17 esv
A New Creation
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
The next time you want to be a Maverick maybe be a Goose ;)
Live for His glory... Succeed for His kingdom!
