Stop for a second and think about the last sacrifice you made.
Was it for yourself? For family? For a co-worker? A neighbor? Did you feel good? Did it frustrate you? Did it frustrate your spouse?
Sacrificing something is never easy unless it's for yourself. Sacrifice is the point I want us to focus on today. Sacrifice not for yourself but for others that genuinely honor Christ and furthers His kingdom.
Discipleship should not be viewed as something we are required to do but as a sacrificial act. This same sacrificial act was performed by Jesus who eventually died for our sins. We are primarily replicating this action to others so that they might gain eternity in heaven with him and thus go out and do the same for another.
Here is a passage from our Biblical Foundation book Module 4 - Personal Ministry:
Discipling others is a sacrificial act. It’s humbling ourselves so that we might see others rise up for His glory and further His kingdom. It’s a desire to help others find God’s grace, love, guidance, and understanding so that they will be able to go and do the same for others. Our gain is found in Him!
Discipleship is not about accepting others way of life but a sacrificial love lived out in front others i.e. we sacrifice our selfish needs for one another in order to bring Him the glory and further His kingdom! This includes:
Mutual Love - Giving His love in turn fills your spirit
Humility - It's about seeing other succeed for His glory, thus furthering His kingdom
Guiding Toward Heaven - The process involves guiding others towards His kingdom. Keep the focus clear and always in front. We disciple for His glory and to further His kingdom!
Modeling - Living out Christ's way of life faithfully in front of others
Correcting - Guiding others towards the way God wants us to live not towards our own selfish way of life
Teaching - You can't disciple without teaching others what someone else has taught you. This goes all the way back to the first disciples. They taught what Christ taught them and so on and so on. Teach His word nothing else!
Initiating i.e. Inviting - Invite those that want desire a life lived for Christ. We can't help those that don't want to be helped but we can help those who desire a life with Christ. Those who don't know him yet will see Him in you and will ask. This is why Modeling is important in the future invite ;) ;)
Let's dive into some scripture
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
The Parable of the Talents
14 “For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. 15 To one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went away. 16 He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents more. 17 So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. 18 But he who had received the one talent went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money. 19 Now after a long time the master of those servants came and settled accounts with them. 20 And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.’ 21 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 22 And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here, I have made two talents more.’ 23 His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ 24 He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, 25 so I was afraid, and I went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, you have what is yours.’ 26 But his master answered him, ‘You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no seed? 27 Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received what was my own with interest. 28 So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. 29 For to everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away. 30 And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’
Our hope today is not to guilt anyone into discipleship. It's to reveal a love that Christ provides for us. He sent His son as a sacrifice for us and in doing so left us with a model to replicate with one another.
Discipleship is not a requirement, but an act of Christ's love played out for His glory and for His kingdom!
