High school consisted of two things: 1.) a note book and 2.) Wakeboard Magazine. Without these, I would have never been able to achieve a B average! That and the only college that would except me required it, so I hunkered down for the last 6 months of high school and brought my B- up to a B. Maybe I didn't take high school serious because I never found the locker I was assigned. I was a high school hobo, skating by, wandering the halls from locker to locker, and getting what I needed from friends.
All this to say that I didn't exactly take high school very seriously, but what about my faith. I grew up knowing God, but I didn't get serious about His plan for my life until I met my wife. One of the first questions she asked me, a couple dates into our relationship, is: "Where does God stand in your life?" Wow! Pump the brakes! I thought we were just dating and having a good time, but that one question threw my whole life upside down (for the good!). That was the first time someone had flat our asked me where God stood in my life. From that day forward my relationship with God has grown tremendously.
God is asking all of us: "Where do I (God) stand in your life?" How will you answer this? Is He a good buddy or someone you admire, respect, and want to follow? James 4:4 goes as far as saying:
You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God.
God jealously longs for us (James 4:5). He doesn't want us to be buddies, he wants a serious relationship with us. One where we are devoted to Him and not the world. He's not looking at the Sunday attendance sheet, He's looking deep into our hearts and examining our true desires.
So, it's time to get out off the fence and answer the question: Are you serious about God?
If you answered yes then heed what James tells us in James 4:7-12
7-10 So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet.
11-12 Don’t bad-mouth each other, friends. It’s God’s Word, his Message, his Royal Rule, that takes a beating in that kind of talk. You’re supposed to be honoring the Message, not writing graffiti all over it. God is in charge of deciding human destiny. Who do you think you are to meddle in the destiny of others?
